Note from Jack Daily: I was flying the EW support for his mission which was to hit a bridge in the Hanoi area. It was a very dark night but clear under the overcast so it was easy to see the action. He was the only airplane going in. From the time he coasted in we counted 17 SAMs fired at him with intense AAA throughout the route. I couldn’t believe it when he called Feet Wet. It reminded me of the WWII bomber crews holding their position and intentionally flying into the flak to get to the target. His performance that night met every criterion for the Navy Cross. I was also down wind on a GCA at Danang on the night when he was taking off with 26 500# bombs and the tower cleared a C-141 carrying oxygen and acetylene to cross the runway. Fred tried to miss the 141 which resulted in his aircraft rolling inverted from the collision while he was still on the ground and then both aircraft blew up. You can imagine the explosion. Fred and his BN survived but Fred had serious damage to at least one of his legs. He was Medivaced to Guam where they told him he would probably be permanently grounded and may not walk again. He was back flying combat in the A-6 three months later. I’m not sure about the time frame, it may have been less than three months. I knew from our days in Basic School when he would offer to carry the BAR when it was my turn, that Fred was a Warrior. Respectfully Submitted, Zorro
